With the introduction of agriculture more than 7000 years ago, humans began to fundamentally structure and shape the landscape for their own purposes. Over the past decades, archaeologists have investigated countless settlements and burial monuments from the Neolithic Age to the Middle Ages, giving us a picture of the succession of cultures.

For a few years now, archaeologists have had new methods at their disposal which, in addition to these selective investigations, provide extensive information, including airborne laser scanning technology. With images taken in this way and paired with aerial photographs and historical maps, the new method allows new conclusions to be drawn about the early development of the cultural landscape.

In his lecture at the TU Ilmenau Citizens' Campus, Prof. Michael Köhler, Professor Emeritus of Physical Chemistry at the TU Ilmenau and author of numerous publications on cultural history, will use this new data to trace the connection between livestock farming, the development of paths and the creation of memorial landscapes.
