In Germany, up to 100,000 people die each year due to thromboses. Thromboses are blood clots in a vessel that obstruct the flow of blood and can occur in various parts of the body - in the vast majority of cases in the legs, because this is where the blood accumulates the most, but also directly in the heart. The classic warning signs: Swelling, pain and tightness in the legs. Sometimes one leg feels warmer than the other and often there is also a livid discoloration, i.e. bluish, ashy or very pale skin.

But thrombosis does not always cause immediate symptoms. Or, as often happens, the non-specific symptoms are misinterpreted. Then a thrombosis can lead to an embolism of the pulmonary artery: In around 60 percent of all cases, part of the blood clot detaches and travels with the bloodstream to the lungs, where it can then also block a vessel. The consequences: Shortness of breath, shortness of breath, circulatory problems and even death.

In his lecture as part of the TU Ilmenau Citizens' Campus, Ilhami Benli explains Ilhami Benli, Chief Physician of the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Ilm-Kreis-Kliniken Arnstadt-Ilmenau, how to prevent thrombosis and what diagnostic and treatment options are available.
