The Technische Universität Ilmenau will in future coordinate the European University Alliance SUNRISE, to which nine European universities belong. On June 28, the EU Commission announced the 14 funded networks in this year's call for proposals, which were able to prevail in a tough competition for the best concepts from a group of 60 applications. SUNRISE will be funded for four years with a total of 14.4 million euros.

SUNRISE stands for "Smaller (strategic) Universities Network for Regional Innovative and Sustainable Evolution". "This name," says Prof. Kai-Uwe Sattler, President of TU Ilmenau, "contains precisely the development goals that we have been preparing together with our partners for three years: We want to strengthen our role as a driver of innovation for sustainable development in our regions through intensive exchange and strategic cooperation."

The partners of the SUNRISE alliance are a total of nine European universities with a focus on STEM fields (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology) from Bosnia-Herzegovina, France, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Sweden and Cyprus, which, in addition to their similar size, study programs and location away from urban centers, also have similarities in their structural higher education policy challenges. The nine SUNRISE alliance universities are supported in their activities by 48 associated partners from business, science, politics and administration (SUNRISE partner universities see below).

In the SUNRISE network, TU Ilmenau will work with its partners to develop concepts for innovative teaching and learning formats, study programs and student mobility, as well as strategies for improved joint research, but also for more intensive cooperation with business and society. For Prof. Kai-Uwe Sattler, this is a win-win situation for all partners involved: "We are not only developing our strengths further, but also learning from those of the others - in view of the many challenges we face in Europe, we should also look for solutions together and on a European level".

The partner universities have already launched their first activities. They are developing models to better integrate sustainability aspects into engineering education and the first students will soon be able to study flexibly within the network.

The "European University Initiative" is one of the European Union's major strategic initiatives in the field of education. A total of 64 cross-border alliances of universities from all over Europe are being funded. A total of 50 alliances have already been selected in the previous rounds of calls for proposals.
