New Ways of Learning

The Technische Universität Ilmenau coordinates the European university alliance SUNRISE - "Smaller (strategic) Universities Network for Regional Innovative and Sustainable Evolution", a strategic alliance of nine partner universities for innovative and sustainable regional development.

They are supported by 48 associated partners from business, science, politics and administration.

The alliance comprises a total of 62,500 students, 49 departments, 4808 researchers and over 500 Erasmus+/Horizon projects. Together they develop

  • Concepts for innovative teaching and learning formats and study programs
  • Models for the further integration of sustainability aspects into engineering education
  • Exchange programs for students to study flexibly within the network and gain European experience
  • Strategies for joint research and intensive cooperation with industry and society

The partners in the SUNRISE alliance are similar in size and location away from conurbations, but are united by their focus on STEM subjects - mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology - and by a common goal: to shape the future of study, teaching, research and innovation for the benefit of society through intensive exchange and strategic cooperation.

"We see ourselves as drivers of innovation for sustainable development in our regions. We continue to develop our strengths, learn from each other and work together on a European level to find solutions to the many challenges we face in Europe: from tackling climate change and attracting skilled workers to preserving European values and democracy"

Prof. Kai-Uwe Sattler, President of the TU Ilmenau
