A new approach for laser-based joining of hybrid components in butt joint configuration is shown in this paper. The impact of the laser process as well as different surface conditions (as-delivered, corundum blasting, laser structuring) on the joint strength and joining zone are demonstrated. The results were transferred into a model concept for thermal joining of tailored welded blanks made of metals and thermoplastics.
