Project idea and implementation of the project

In the project, the BASIC teaching model was developed and the testing was accompanied and evaluated.

The concept of a "Basic Engineering School" was defined as an internal university development project. For the conceptual development, testing and evaluation, the guiding module concept derived from the fields of action was chosen , with the four guiding modules of teaching, competence, continuing education and marketing. The project management was located directly in the university management (Prorector for Education/Vice President for Studies and Teaching). The organizational integration was in the Central Institute for Education (ZIB) at the TU Ilmenau. The project was handled internally at the university by an interdisciplinary project team consisting of members of various faculties and central structural units.

The BASIC teaching model includes the interdisciplinary teaching of basic engineering knowledge within the first two semesters. The proportion of application and problem-oriented teaching of basic engineering knowledge is increased. The monitoring of the students' competencies and knowledge growth is an integral part of the concept. The goal is to offer the different student groups appropriate learning and counseling opportunities for the targeted further development of their competencies.

Within the framework of the project, the BASIC teaching model was tested and further developed across all structures at the TU Ilmenau with annual BASIC model groups. The number of participating study programs and faculties was successively expanded in the course of the project.

The implementation of the concept for all bachelor's degree programs in engineering took place step by step. In each run, individual results were transferred to regular operation and structural and organizational preparations were made for implementation in regular operation.

The use of the new forms of teaching and learning was supported by an extensive continuing education and qualification program for the teaching staff.

Final report and documents on funding phase 1 of the project

The main focus of the 1st funding phase was the development and testing of coordinated measures for the implementation of the BASIC teaching concept. The brand "BASIC" stands for a special study model for study starters at the TU Ilmenau.

The following figure illustrates the focal points of the work in the guiding modules teaching, competence, further education and marketing.

BASIC2

Duration: 01.01.2017 - 31.03.2021, FKZ : 01PL16102

Documents and publications on the funding phase 2 of the project

In the 2nd funding phase, the initiated measures were continued and further developed. Special emphasis was placed on measures for the transfer and continuation of suitable project results. In particular, adjustments were necessary for the integration of further target study programs, for the future-oriented design of the competence check system and for the expansion of consulting and supplementary offers.

The following figure from the accompanying scientific research illustrates the areas in which the results of this project phase can be classified.

Statistics

The testing of the BASIC teaching model took place in particular in the BASIC model groups.

  • A total of 500 students completed the first two semesters of their bachelor's or diploma program at the TU Ilmenau in the BASIC model groups from 2011 to 2020. Annually, about 15% - 20% of the students from the participating study programs took advantage of this offer. The number of participating study programs and faculties was successively expanded during the course of the project.
  • 18 interdisciplinary seminar groups were accompanied by the project team during the project period.
  • Students from 10 different fields of study were represented in the BASIC model groups.
  • 144 exhibits were created as a result of the complex interdisciplinary practical projects and were impressively presented in public final events.
  • More than 1,500 competence checks were carried out with prospective students and students of the TU Ilmenau and evaluated in personal feedback interviews with the students.
