After the end of the American Apollo flights to the moon in 1972, it became lonely on the moon. In the decades that followed, hardly any new moon missions were launched. This was partly because the prestige duel between the USA and the Soviet Union had been decided, and partly because the unmanned and manned flights had yielded a lot of material and information, which led many people to believe that they now knew the moon. But in the last 10 years, the number of missions to the moon has increased dramatically again.

In his lecture at the TU Ilmenau Citizens' Campus, Prof. Olaf Kretzer, member of the board of the German Astronomical Society and director of the Suhl public and school observatory, explains what triggered this new "moon boom". Prof. Kretzer also explains the aims of the new missions and why other nations and private companies are now joining this new race.
