With the reunification of the divided Germany, profound changes took place in the agriculture and food industry of the former GDR. Through the use of high technology from the field to the barn, cultivation and production conditions changed fundamentally and animal husbandry became more species-appropriate.

In his lecture at the TU Ilmenau Citizens' Campus, Peter Heinze, a trained butcher and later journalist who wrote about the reconstruction of the East for many years after reunification, traces the development of the East German agricultural and food industry. Heinze concludes that, unlike other industries, this sector of the economy can survive in national and European markets today with high labor productivity and fresh regional products.
