Much too young, at the age of 35, the musical genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died. Goethe said of him, "An apparition like Mozart always remains a miracle that cannot be explained." The mystery of Mozart and the unexplained circumstances of his early death have led to a multitude of hypotheses and speculations. And to legends - such as the one that a strangely dressed "gray messenger" ordered a funeral mass. Not least the circumstances surrounding Mozart's funeral have contributed to the myths surrounding his death.
In his lecture in the context of the TU Ilmenau Citizens' Campus draws Dr. Friedrich Meier, known for his numerous lectures on medical history, among others at the University Hospital Jena, will trace not so much the gifted artist as the human being Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with his habits, his environment and his medical peculiarities. On the basis of available medical facts, the former long-time chief physician of the Thuringia Clinics in Saalfeld illuminates and evaluates recent research findings and possible causes of death. But even today, he concludes, Mozart's mortal remains continue to puzzle us.
