Modelling micro-Doppler signature of drone propellers in distributed ISAC. - In: IEEE Xplore digital library, ISSN 2473-2001, (2024), insges. 6 S.
Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) comprises detection and analysis of non-cooperative targets by exploiting the resources of the mobile radio system. In this context, micro-Doppler is of great importance for target classification, in order to distinguish objects with local movements. For developing algorithms for target classification, it is necessary to have a large amount of target signatures. Aiming to generate these data, this paper proposes a mathematical model for the micro-Doppler of drone rotating propellers, and validate the proposed model by comparing it to measured micro-Doppler. Results show that the proposed mathematical model can generate micro-Doppler data very similar to those from measurement data.

Improving the spatial correlation characteristics of antenna arrays using linear operators and wide-band modelling. - In: IEEE Xplore digital library, ISSN 2473-2001, (2024), S. 67-73
The analysis of wireless communication channels at the mmWave, sub-THz and THz bands gives rise to difficulties in the construction of antenna arrays due to the small maximum inter-element spacing constraints at these frequencies. Arrays with uniform spacing greater than half the wavelength for a certain carrier frequency exhibit aliasing side-lobes in the angular domain, prohibiting non-ambiguous estimates of a propagating wave-front’s angle of arrival. In this paper, we present how wide-band modelling of the array response is useful in mitigating this spatial aliasing effect. This approach aims to reduce the grating lobes by exploiting the angle- and frequency-dependent phase-shifts observed in the response of the array to a planar wave-front travelling across it.Furthermore, we propose a method by which the spatial correlation characteristics of an array operating at 33 GHz carrier frequency with an instantaneous bandwidth of 1 GHz can be improved such that the angular-domain side-lobes are reduced by 5-10 dB. This method, applicable to arbitrary antenna array manifolds, makes use of a linear operator that is applied to the base-band samples of the channel transfer function measured in space and frequency domains. By means of synthetically simulated arrays, we show that when operating with a bandwidth of 1 GHz, the use of a derived linear operator applied to the array output results in the spatial correlation characteristics approaching those of the array operating at a bandwidth of 12 GHz. Hence, non-ambiguous angle estimates can be obtained in the field without the use of expensive high-bandwidth RF front-end components.

Excitation signal design for THz channel sounding and propagation parameter estimation. - In: IEEE Xplore digital library, ISSN 2473-2001, (2024), insges. 5 S.
In this publication, we analyze how the performance of propagation parameter estimation for THz channel sounding can be improved by the power spectrum design of a multicarrier waveform. To this end, we discuss the Fisher information of the propagation parameters and the corresponding deterministic Cramèr-Rao lower bound (CRB) as well as their relation to the carrier powers of the excitation signal. We use these quantities to design waveforms that improve range estimation. In practice, evaluating the Fisher information requires prior knowledge of the propagation scenario which is usually unavailable. Hence, we propose two solutions which we compare numerically to the classical approach of equal power distribution. The evaluation shows that an optimized power distribution can improve the CRB comparable up to a 4 dB gain in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) if knowledge about the propagation scenario is available and slightly less if the scenario is unknown.

Characterization of propagation from measurements at sub-THz for ISAC applications in an emulated dynamic industrial scenario. - In: IEEE Xplore digital library, ISSN 2473-2001, (2024), insges. 5 S.
The large blocks of free instantaneous bandwidth at (sub-)THz and the utilization of high gain radio interfaces makes the (sub-)THz suitable for sensing applications. In this paper we present the analysis of novel dual-polarized double directional measurements at 190 GHz in an industrial setting with integrated sensing and communication applications in view. The set-up consists of a bi-static configuration emulating two access points with beam-steering capabilities in a machine room. One access point serves a machine with a wireless link, while the other access point senses the environment to detect moving objects. The objective is to detect possible obstructions that could interrupt the communication link or cause accidents on the production line. The results have shown that the system aspects as narrow beams and large bandwidths allow the early identification of objects in the environment from the measured channel impulse response.

Ray tracing and measurement-based characterization of inter/intra-machine THz wireless channels. - In: IEEE Xplore digital library, ISSN 2473-2001, (2024), insges. 5 S.
We characterize the wireless propagation channels at 300 GHz in an industrial environment through measurements and ray tracing simulations. Two different scenarios are considered representing wireless connections between an access point and an industrial machine (inter-machine scenario), and between two components inside the same machine (intra-machine scenario) are considered. For both scenarios, we compute the channel response in terms of power angle delay profile and compare the results obtained through measurements and simulations, which show a good match.

Grid-free harmonic retrieval and model order selection using convolutional neural networks. - In: IEEE Xplore digital library, ISSN 2473-2001, (2024), insges. 5 S.
Harmonic retrieval techniques are the foundation of radio channel sounding, estimation and modeling. This paper introduces a Deep Learning approach for joint delay- and Doppler estimation from frequency and time samples of a radio channel transfer function. Our work estimates the two-dimensional parameters from a signal containing an unknown number of paths. Compared to existing deep learning-based methods, the signal parameters are not estimated via classification but in a quasi-grid-free manner. This alleviates the bias, spectral leakage, and ghost targets that grid-based approaches produce. The proposed architecture also reliably estimates the number of paths in the measurement. Hence, it jointly solves the model order selection and parameter estimation task. Additionally, we propose a multi-channel windowing of the data to increase the estimator's robustness. We also compare the performance to other harmonic retrieval methods and integrate it into an existing maximum likelihood estimator for efficient initialization of a gradient-based iteration.

Shut off! - hybrid BICMOS logic for power-efficient high speed circuits. - In: SMACD 23, (2023), insges. 4 S.
Power efficiency is crucial, especially in high-speed systems, where conventional approaches like clock gating cannot be employed readily. Special logic families, such as Positive Emitter-Coupled Logic (PECL), push the technological frontier, promising even more speed at the expense of an even more strained power budget. We propose a novel hybrid of PECL and Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) logic to introduce Function Shut-off (FSO), realizing a shut-off at the level of functional blocks and logic primitives inside complex logic cells. Using this approach, we realize a high-speed Linear Feedback Shift Register (LFSR) in a SiGe technology, extending the State of the Art (SOTA) by adding reconfigurability, which is required for its use as sequence generator in Compressed Sensing (CS) applications. We present measurements showing successful fabrication and performance of the packaged die at 20.4 GHz. In this LFSR, employing FSO reduces the supply current by a factor of up to four (depending on the chosen configuration) and reduces active area by 17%.

Characterization of propagation in an industrial scenario from sub-6 GHz to 300 GHz. - In: IEEE Xplore digital library, ISSN 2473-2001, (2023), S. 1475-1480
We perform simultaneous multi-band ultra-wideband dual-polarized double-directional measurements at sub-6 GHz (center frequency, 6.75 GHz), mmWave (74.25 GHz), and sub-THz (305.27 GHz) in line of sight (LOS) and non-LOS in a small industrial scenario (machine room). The aim is to characterize the propagation at THz taking as a reference the lower bands and identifying shared and distinguishing features. The spatial/temporal analysis of the measurements shows strong similarities in multi-path components (MPCs) between the different bands. Moreover, high order reflections have been identified at THz. Overall, the results indicate that THz channels exhibit significant multipath, with some specular MPCs unique to the band and with lower contribution by the diffuse components. Finally, path-loss has also been computed and compared with existing multi-band models.

Autoencoder-based learning of transmission parameters in fast pulse-echo ultrasound imaging employing sparse recovery. - In: 2023 IEEE 9th International Workshop on Computational Advances in Multi-Sensor Adaptive Processing (CAMSAP), (2023), S. 516-520
There is recently a notable rise in the exploration of pulse-echo ultrasound image reconstruction techniques that address the inverse problem employing sparse signal and rely on a single measurement cycle. Nevertheless, these techniques continue to pose significant challenges with regard to accuracy of estimations. Previous studies have endeavored to decrease the correlation between received samples in each transducer array in order to enhance accuracy of sparsely approximated solutions to inverse problems. In this paper, our objective is to learn the transmission parameters within a parametric measurement matrix by employing an autoencoder, which encodes sparse spatial data with a parametric measurement matrix and subsequently decodes it using Fast Iterative Shrinkage-Thresholding Algorithm (FISTA). Outcomes exhibit superior performance in comparison to both state-of-art random selection of the parameters and conventional plane wave imaging (PWI) scenarios in terms of reconstruction accuracy.

Data-driven subsampling matrices design for phased array ultrasound nondestructive testing. - In: IEEE IUS 2023, International Ultrasonics Symposium, Palais des congrès de Montréal, September 3-8, 2023, (2023), insges. 4 S.
By subsampling optimally in the spatial and temporal domains, ultrasound imaging can achieve high performance, while also accelerating data acquisition and reducing storage requirements. We study the design of experiment problem that attempts to find an optimal choice of the subsampling patterns, leading to a non-convex combinatorial optimization problem. Recently, deep learning was shown to provide a feasible approach for solving such problems efficiently by virtue of the softmax function as a differentiable approximation of the one-hot encoded subsampling vectors. We incorporate softmax neural networks into information theory-based and task-based algorithms, respectively, to design optimal subsampling matrices in Full Matrix Capture (FMC) measurements predicated on compressed sensing theory.

Deep learning-based optimal spatial subsampling in ultrasound nondestructive testing. - In: 31st European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO 2024), (2023), S. 1863-1867
Traditional ultrasound synthetic aperture imaging relies on closely spaced measurement positions, where the pitch size is smaller than half the ultrasound wavelength. While this approach achieves high-quality images, it necessitates the storage of large data sets and an extended measurement time. To address these issues, there is a burgeoning interest in exploring effective subsampling techniques. Recently, Deep Probabilistic Subsampling (DPS) has emerged as a feasible approach for designing selection matrices for multi-channel systems. In this paper, we address spatial subsampling in single-channel ultrasound imaging for Nondestructive Testing (NDT) applications. To accomplish a model-based data-driven spatial subsampling approach within the DPS framework that allows for the optimal selection of sensing positions on a discretized grid, it is crucial to build an adequate signal model and design an adapted network architecture with a reasonable cost function. The reconstructed image quality is then evaluated through simulations, showing that the presented subsampling pattern approaches the performance of fully sampling and substantially outperforms uniformly spatial subsampling in terms of signal recovery quality.

Misspecification under the narrowband assumption: a Cramér-Rao bound perspective. - In: 31st European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO 2024), (2023), S. 1524-1528
To efficiently extract estimates about the propagation behavior of electromagnetic waves in a radio environment it is common to invoke the narrowband-assumption. It essentially states that the relative bandwidth of the measurement system is so low that the frequency response of a single propagation path only depends on it Time-of-Flight and the response of the measurement device can be calibrated independently of the measured channel. Recent advances into higher relative bandwidths and antenna arrays with larger spatial aperture render this assumption less likely to be satisfied, which leads to a model mismatch during estimation. In this case estimates are inherently biased and have a special statistical behavior. This behavior can be captured by the so-called Misspecified Cramér-Rao Bound, which formulates a lower bound for the variance of estimates that are biased due to model mismatch. We analyze this bound in contrast to the traditional Cramér-Rao Bound and show the shortcomings in the setting of joint ToF-DoA estimation in the mmWave spectrum. The conducted numerical studies also show that planar array geometries inherently suffer from violation of the narrowband assumption irrespective of the individual elements' frequency response, whereas circular structures show it to a lesser degree.

Optimization of transmission parameters in fast pulse-echo ultrasound imaging using sparse recovery. - In: 31st European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO 2024), (2023), S. 441-445
In pulse-echo ultrasound imaging, the goal is to achieve a certain image quality while minimizing the duration of the signal acquisition. In the past, fast ultrasound imaging methods applying sparse signal recovery have been implemented by accepting a single pulse-echo measurement. However, they have experienced a certain amount of reconstruction error. In sparse signal recovery, reducing the correlation between the samples of the measurements observed by the different receivers is beneficial for lowering the reconstruction error. Exploiting the Born approximation and Green's function for the wave equation, the analytical inverse scattering problem can be defined in matrix-vector form. Adopting this setting, it has been suggested in the past to reduce the correlation between the samples of the measurement using Cylindrical Waves (CWs) with randomly selected delays and weights. In a similar setting, we created an optimization problem accepting transmission delays and weights as variables to minimize the correlation between the samples of the measurement in each receiver. We demonstrate via simulations that CWs employing the optimized transmission parameters outperformed the cases with Plane Wave Imaging (PWI) and CWs with random transmission parameters in terms of reconstruction accuracy.

Deep learning based positioning with beamformed CSI fingerprints. - In: Proceedings of the 2023 13th International Conference on Indoor Positioning and Indoor Navigation (IPIN), (2023), insges. 6 S.
User positioning with deep learning (DL) models based on channel state information (CSI) fingerprints, e.g., obtained at a base station (BS), has emerged as a promising technology. Related prior works generally assume a CSI fingerprint with multiple spatial dimensions (i.e antennas or beams) at the BS but only a single spatial dimension at the user equipment (UE). However, a UE may be equipped with multiple antennas or may need to perform beamforming, e.g., to support transmissions at higher frequencies. In this work we consider user positioning with DL models based on uplink beamformed CSI fingerprints considering multiple spatial dimensions at both the BS and the UE. By considering a single or multiple beams at the BS and UE, the use of different CSI fingerprints is proposed. The positioning accuracy achieved with the different beamformed CSI fingerprints is evaluated and compared. The different orientation during training and UE deployment is also considered. In addition, we also consider the positioning of UEs with different spatial capabilities, i.e. with different number of beams. This work provides valuable insights into the design of wireless positioning with CSI fingerprints considering multiple spatial dimensions at both the BS and UE.

Demonstration and validation of a 3D wave field synthesis setup for multiple GNSS satellite emulation via over-the-air testing. - In: AMTA 2023 proceedings, (2023), insges. 10 S.
Wireless devices supporting global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) services have become an essential tool in different areas of technology such as agriculture, construction, automotive, etc. Therefore the performance and reliability of such devices are important aspects that need to be addressed in the testing stage during the development of the units. The integration of the Over-the-Air (OTA) testing method with the 3D Wave Field Synthesis (3DWFS) technique offer not only the benefit of having tests under controllable and repeatable conditions but also the ability to recreate complex and realistic scenarios in a controlled environment with full polarimetric support for the testing of wireless devices. This contribution applies this technology to emulate a GNSS scenario within an anechoic chamber. For the results validation, a realistic GNSS outdoor scenario was recorded and compared with the emulated scenario where 3DWFS was applied for each individual satellite. This represents a significant step for the GNSS community and also for the future development and testing of wireless devices.

Distributed ISAC systems - multisensor radio access and coordination. - In: 2023 20th European Radar Conference, (2023), S. 351-354
Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) qualifies mobile radio systems for detecting and localizing of passive objects by means of radar sensing. Advanced ISAC networks rely on distributed infrastructure, multisensor uplink and downlink, or meshed sidelink access. In this way, ISAC develops into a MS-MIMO (multisensor multiple input multiple output) network which constitutes a distributed MIMO radar network. Multisensor link coordination and synchronization are becoming crucial. Many multisensor access and signaling techniques find their communication counterpart in multiuser MIMO and cooperative multilink communications (CoMP) and can be adopted from there.

Mutual over-the-air frequency synchronization of continuous wave signals. - In: 2023 20th European Radar Conference, (2023), S. 363-366
Future communication and radar sensing systems will require synchronization methods which are more versatile in terms of the systems involved in the synchronization process. We present an over-the-air frequency synchronization algorithm based on self-synchronization which uses continuous wave signals. In contrast to other approaches, all nodes of the network participate equally, and synchronization can even be achieved in presence of a non-cooperative node. These claims are supported by measurements conducted with continuous wave radars. It will be demonstrated that our algorithm enables synchronization accuracies down to 1.92 ppb and thus could provide sufficient accuracy for velocity measurements on pedestrians.

We present our new scalable multi-channel and multi-node sounder, the ILMSound G3 . It is configurable in terms of the number of switched Tx and parallel Rx nodes. The basic structures of the Tx and Rx nodes are given with consideration of the measurement system requirements. The ILMSound G3 is validated via a proof of concept measurement at 2.53 GHz in an urban environment. The system was configured as a sounder with two Tx nodes and one Rx node, which records two MIMO links simultaneously. Each node uses an antenna array. The transmitters were moved by cars whereas the receiver was elevated 20 m above the ground by a lifting platform acting as a base station. The used system configuration results in a snapshot rate of approx. 0.5 kHz, which covers the expected time variance of the chosen environment. The measurement results were analyzed using HRPE, providing a parametric description of the specular propagation paths of the radio channel per measurement link. Each estimated path is described by its directions of departure and arrival, delay, Doppler shift, and fully polarimetric complex path weights.

Sensing resources reduction for vehicle detection with integrated sensing and communications. - In: 2023 IEEE 97th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC2023-Spring), (2023), insges. 5 S.
Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) aims at incorporating radar and communications functionalities into a single system, achieving higher spectral efficiency through their joint operation. This paper proposes a methodology for reducing resource elements and scanning beams used in the target detection stage of ISAC. Building upon the well-known symbol domain Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) ISAC processing algorithm, its relevant characteristics and limits are considered to minimize the periodicity of sensing resource elements. Moreover, a methodology for finding the required beams to sense a scenario using the radar range equation in a link-budget analysis is proposed and later illustrated via simulations. The simulations show that it is possible to cover a road scenario using a limited number of beams and resource elements from a New Radio (NR) OFDM frame.

Fill level measurement of low-permittivity material using an M-sequence UWB radar. - In: International journal of microwave and wireless technologies, ISSN 1759-0795, Bd. 15 (2023), 8, S. 1299-1307
Due to increasingly complex and automated manufacturing processes, the demands on the control parameters of these processes are also increasing. One parameter is the fill quantity of, e.g., liquids in production plants, whose precise determination is of ever-growing importance. Up to now, the exact level of determination under difficult conditions, such as high ambient temperatures, has been a particular challenge. This paper demonstrates a novel method by which an M-sequence UWB radar can determine levels of low-permittivity materials in small metal containers. For this purpose, hot melt is used as an example. Thus, the influence of large temperature differences on the long-term stability of level measurement can also be investigated. The measurements show that the level of hot melt can be measured to be long-term stable with an accuracy of better than 3 mm. Furthermore, the precise determination of the empty state is highly important for many applications. For this reason, this paper shows a method for determining the empty state without complex calibration procedures. For the empty level indication, an accuracy of up to 0.5 mm could be achieved for molten hot glue and 3% of the tank volume, independent of the shape or aggregate state of the medium.

Optimum access-point constellation for indoor time difference of arrival positioning. - In: 2023 IEEE/ION Position, Location and Navigation Symposium (PLANS), (2023), S. 1234-1240
The availability of ubiquitous location services is a highly desirable feature for many upcoming applications in the realm of the Internet of Things (IoT), including asset tracking, navigation services especially in indoor environments such as shopping centers, or emergency people tracking in schools, hospitals, and prisons. While outdoor positioning is perfectly covered by Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), indoor positioning services, except for a few pioneer projects, did not hit the mainstream yet. At first, this is surprising, as the underlying technology has been known for years and solutions already exist based on WiFi or Bluetooth beacons. A major problem is, that the locations of those beacons need to be highly tailored to the specific indoor floorplan for high positioning accuracies, which directly contradicts the need for a cheap installment. Picking up this challenge, we present a methodology for fast optimization of access point locations in indoor environments, maximizing coverage and positioning accuracy that will facilitate a broad deployment of indoor positioning systems.

Efficient phased array radiation pattern evaluation for 5G and SatCom On-The-Move (SOTM) applications. - In: 17th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP 2023), (2023), insges. 5 S.
In satellite communications, it is becoming challenging to provide the tracking performance which is required for Non-Geostationary Orbit (NGSO) constellations with the traditional Satellite Communications (SatCom) On The Move (SOTM) terminal structure which employs bulky parabolic antennas. On the other hand, in terrestrial networks, the single omnidirectional communication with User Equipment (UE) does not provide enough throughput to fulfill the need for higher speed connections. As a consequence, manufacturers started to invest in developing new terminals which use phased array antennas to enable beamforming to increase the directivity and null the interference in terrestrial networks and to provide rapid tracking performance as well as seamless handovers in SOTM. However, this generates new challenge as these antennas change beam patterns depending on the beam steering angle. It is not trivial to evaluate the performance of beamforming antennas since the measurement of the high number of beam patterns that the phased array can form in all directions is time consuming. In this paper, we propose a methodology to measure a large number of beam patterns of a phased array antenna in a more time efficient approach compared to traditional antenna measurement methods. The measured patterns can be used to evaluate the antenna performance and capabilities in different conditions and verify the terminal ability to fulfill the requirements specified by the standards.

Receiver bandwidth extension beyond Nyquist using channel bonding. - In: 17th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP 2023), (2023), insges. 5 S.
Current and upcoming communication and sensing technologies require ever larger bandwidths. Channel bonding can be utilized to extend a receiver’s instantaneous bandwidth beyond a single converter’s Nyquist limit. Two potential joint front-end and converter design approaches are theoretically introduced, realized and evaluated in this paper. The Xilinx RFSoC platform with its 5 GSa/s analog to digital converters (ADCs) is used to implement both a hybrid coupler based in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) sampling and a time-interleaved sampling approach along with channel bonding. Both realizations are demonstrated to be able to reconstruct instantaneous bandwidths of 5 GHz with up to 49 dB image rejection ratio (IRR) typically within 4 to 8 dB the front-ends’ theoretical limits.

Measurement-based analysis of multi-band assisted beam-forming at mmWave in industrial scenarios. - In: 17th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP 2023), (2023), insges. 5 S.
The mmWave and sub-THz bands are foreseen as candidates to achieve the data-rate demands in the beyond 5G and 6G wireless communication networks. The co-existence of multiple radio interfaces at several bands enables data fusion and the utilization of the similarities and differences on propagation and system properties for communication and sensing applications. MmWave radio interfaces rely on directive beams that require high training overhead for beam steering. Sensors in the network infrastructure and co-located radio interfaces at sub-6 GHz and mmWave can be used to assist the beam-forming process at mmWave. In the present paper we investigate the performance of multi-band assisted beam-forming in an industrial environment. We empirically demonstrate from real-world measurements that even in NLOS, the direction of the beams estimated at sub-6 GHz can be used to established a link at mmWave.

Reduction of mutual coupling between dual-polarized antenna elements using defected ground structures. - In: 17th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP 2023), (2023), insges. 5 S.
To accurately model a communication channel using channel sounding technique, having dual-polarized antenna elements and low mutual coupling between them is required. In this work a Defected Ground Structure (DGS) is proposed to reduce the mutual coupling between two dual polarized mmWave antenna elements in an array structure. The defected ground is made of etched C-shape slots. The presence of the DGS has a strong impact on H-plane coupling where a suppression of 35 dB is achieved, while the reduction of E-plane coupling is about 4 dB. The unwanted effect on the radiation patterns is negligible and the back radiation is not increased.

Multi-environment based meta-learning with CSI fingerprints for radio based positioning. - In: 2023 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC), (2023), insges. 6 S.
Radio based positioning of a user equipment (UE) based on deep learning (DL) methods using channel state information (CSI) fingerprints have shown promising results. DL models are able to capture complex properties embedded in the CSI about a particular environment and map UE’s CSI to the UE’s position. However, the CSI fingerprints and the DL models trained on such fingerprints are highly dependent on a particular propagation environment, which generally limits the transfer of knowledge of the DL models from one environment to another. In this paper, we propose a DL model consisting of two parts: the first part aims to learn environment independent features while the second part combines those features depending on the particular environment. To improve transfer learning, we propose a meta learning scheme for training the first part over multiple environments. We show that for positioning in a new environment, initializing a DL model with the meta learned environment independent function achieves higher UE positioning accuracy compared to regular transfer learning from one environment to the new environment, or compared to training the DL model from scratch with only fingerprints from the new environment. Our proposed scheme is able to create an environment independent function which can embed knowledge from multiple environments and more effectively learn from a new environment.

Framework for simulation models and algorithms in ISAC networks. - In: 2023 IEEE 3rd International Symposium on Joint Communications & Sensing (JC & S), (2023), insges. 6 S.
In Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC), radar and communications functionalities share the same radio channel and radio resources. This sharing allows the deployment of both functionalities at a low cost without additional frequency bands and infrastructure. Because radar and communications have different radio resource requirements, new radio access and radio resource management (RRM) methods are required in a shared system. To develop and evaluate new ISAC methods, this paper presents a modular simulation framework for the system level and link level of ISAC networks. The main components of the framework are the data storage, the simulators, and the algorithms. This paper presents the framework's architecture, the integrated simulation models for channel and signal simulation, and the integrated algorithms for multiple radar target localization and data transmission.

Fill level measurements using an M-sequence UWB radar. - In: International journal of microwave and wireless technologies, ISSN 1759-0795, Bd. 15 (2023), 1, S. 74-81
Due to increasingly complex and automated manufacturing processes, the demands on the control parameters of these processes are also increasing. In many applications, such a parameter is the fill quantity, whose precise determination is of ever growing importance. This paper shows with which accuracy and precision an M-sequence ultra-wideband radar can determine levels in small metallic and non-metallic containers with contact-based and contactless measurements. First, the principle of level measurement using guided wave radar is explained and the measurement setup is described. Afterward, the measurement results are shown and discussed. The measurements show that the level can be measured with an accuracy of better than 0.5 mm. In addition, level fluctuations can be detected with a precision of 3 μm. Based on the results of the guided wave radar, the possibilities of volumetric contactless measurement using an electrically small patch antenna are discussed. A particular challenge in contactless level measurement is the high number of multipath components, which strongly influence the accuracy. In addition, there are near-field effects when measuring close to the antenna. Exploiting these near-field effects, an additional method to accurately determine the full state of the container is investigated.

Labeling custom indoor point clouds through 2D semantic image segmentation. - In: 2022 Sixth IEEE International Conference on Robotic Computing, (2022), S. 261-264
For effective Computer Vision (CV) applications, one of the difficult challenges service robots have to face concerns with complete scene understanding. Therefore, various strategies are employed for point-level segregation of the 3D scene, such as semantic segmentation. Currently Deep Learning (DL) based algorithms are popular in this domain. However, they require precisely labeled ground truth data. Generating this data is a lengthy and expensive procedure, resulting in a limited variety of available data. On the contrary, the 2D image domain offers labeled data in abundance. Therefore, this study explores how we can achieve accurate labels for the 3D domain by utilizing semantic segmentation on 2D images and projecting the estimated labels to the 3D space via the depth channel. The labeled data may then be used for vision related tasks such as robot navigation or localization.

Emulation of electromagnetic plane waves for 3D antenna pattern estimation. - In: 2022 IEEE 96th Vehicular Technology Conference:(VTC 2022-Fall), (2022), insges. 6 S.
With the fast development of wireless devices, over-the-air (OTA) testing is becoming the preferred method among developers and manufacturers of wireless equipment. The ability to recreate a scenario under controllable and repeatable conditions keeps the method under constant development, providing new features that increase the realism during the tests. A recent proof of that is the integration of 3D wave field synthesis (3DWFS) to OTA testing, which becomes a significant step to accurately emulate wireless scenarios within a controlled environment. In this context, this contribution improves the OTA system calibration for 3DWFS; efficiently increasing the emulation quality of electromagnetic plane waves impinging from any angular position within an anechoic chamber. In fact, this enhancement implicitly delivers a new method for accurate estimation of the antenna radiation pattern in 3D. This is not only a highly demanded application among antenna manufacturers but in this case also proves the validity of the results and consolidates the integration of 3DWFS to OTA testing.

Enhancement of vision-based 3D reconstruction systems using radar for smart farming. - In: 2022 IEEE International Workshop on Metrology for Agriculture and Forestry, (2022), S. 155-159
Digital field recordings are central to most precision agriculture systems since they can replicate the physical environment and thus monitor the state of an entire field or individual plants. Using different sensors, such as cameras and radar, data can be collected from various domains. Through the combination of radio wave propagation and visible light phenomena, it is possible to enhance, e.g., the optical condition of a fruit with internal parameters such as the water content. This paper proposes a method to correct sensor errors to perform data fusion. As an example, we observe a watermelon with camera and radar sensors and present a system architecture for the visualization of both sensors. For this purpose, we constructed a handheld platform on which both sensors are mounted. In our report, the radar is analyzed in terms of systematic and stochastic errors to formulate an angle-dependent mapping function for error correction. It is successfully shown that camera and radar data are correctly assigned with a watermelon used as a target object, demonstrated by a 3D reconstruction. The proposed system shows promising results for sensor overlay, but radar data remain challenging to interpret.

Deep learning aided interpolation of spatio-temporal nonstationary data. - In: 30th European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO 2022), (2022), S. 2221-2225
Despite the growing interest in many fields, spatio-temporal (ST) interpolation remains challenging. Given ST nonstationary data distributed sparsely and irregularly over space, our objective is to obtain an equidistant representation of the region of interest (ROI). For this reason, an equidistant grid is defined within the ROI, where the available time series data are arranged, and the time series of the unobserved points are interpolated. Aiming to maintain the interpretability of the whole process while offering flexibility and fast execution, this work presents a ST interpolation frame-work which combines a statistical technique with deep learning. Our framework is generic and not confined to a specific application, which also provides the prediction confidence. To evaluate its validity, this framework is applied to ultrasound nondestructive testing (UT) data as an example. After the training with synthetic UT data sets, our framework is shown to yield accurate predictions when applied to measured UT data.

Estimating multi-modal dense multipath components using auto-encoders. - In: 30th European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO 2022), (2022), S. 1716-1720
We present a maximum-likelihood estimation algorithm for radio channel measurements exhibiting a mixture of independent Dense Multipath Components. The novelty of our approach is in the algorithms initialization using a deep learning architecture. Currently, available approaches can only deal with scenarios where a single mode is present. However, in measurements, two or more modes are often observed. This much more challenging multi-modal setting bears two important questions: How many modes are there, and how can we estimate those? To this end, we propose a Neural Net-architecture that can reliably estimate the number of modes present in the data and also provide an initial assessment of their shape. These predictions are used to initialize for gradient- and model-based optimization algorithm to further refine the estimates. We demonstrate numerically how the presented architecture performs on measurement data and analytically study its influence on the estimation of specular paths in a setting where the single-modal approach fails.

Time-domain analysis of ultra-wideband scattering properties of fruits. - In: 2022 19th European Radar Conference, (2022), S. 77-80
In the present paper we evaluate scattering properties of fruits measured with a short-range Ultra-Wideband radar. This is part of our investigation how effectively such a radar can be used to infer information such as fruit biomass or ripeness in an agricultural environment. The covered frequency band spans from 1.4 to 5.6 GHz. We analyze measured impulse responses of a watermelon, a grapefruit, and an apple with respect to a dependency on the distance between radar and fruit and the observation angle i.e., rotation of the fruit. Measurements are performed under laboratory conditions, however, we analyze the data considering a pre-harvest analysis on a field. It becomes apparent that an analysis of the dispersed dominant reflection of the peel is most promising. Due to the natural growth and hence anisotropy of the fruits, we conclude to average over multiple monostatic observation angles to reduce the natural variations of e.g. the scattered power.

Enable SDRs for real-time MIMO channel sounding featuring parallel coherent Rx channels. - In: 2022 IEEE 95th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC2022-Spring), (2022), insges. 5 S.
A parallel receiver architecture for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channel sounding application is presented with a software-defined radio (SDR)-based field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation. The receiver covers phase coherent reception via shared local oscillator (LO) and reference clock, a timing scheme synchronous to the antenna switching at the transmitter, and an integrated automatic gain control (AGC) in all receive channels. It is built with SDRs (NI USRP-2955, X310 series with TwinRx daughterboards). The use of these off-the-shelf hardware components reduces the costs of the sounding system. The FPGA implementation together with the system parameters of the chosen hardware allows a minimum AGC update interval of approx. 44.38 μs. Our setup demonstrates the applicability of state-of-the-art SDRs as a sounding system for continuous acquisition of the time variant, space, and frequency selective radio propagation channel.

From 3D point cloud data to ray-tracing multi-band simulations in industrial scenario. - In: 2022 IEEE 95th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC2022-Spring), (2022), insges. 5 S.
In this paper, we present the ray tracing (RT) simulation in the 3D model of one highly dense clutter industrial hall, which is scanned by laser scanner and reconstructed based on accurate point cloud. The whole processing chain from the scanning of the physical environment to running the simulation is presented in detail. To validate the simulation results, the synthetic channel characteristics and large-scale parameters, including delay spread (DS), angular spread (AS) and path loss (PL), are compared with those obtained from channel sounding measurement in both LOS and NLOS cases, at 6.75 GHz, 30 GHz and 60 GHz. The simulation results show that some scatters are significant in all bands and may be well identified and tracked. This indicates that our target to generate a deterministic channel model or a hybrid channel model at multi-band for industrial scenario may be possible.

Reliable deep learning based localization with CSI fingerprints and multiple base stations. - In: 2022 IEEE International Conference on Communications, (2022), S. 3214-3219
Deep learning (DL) methods have been recently proposed for user equipment (UE) localization in wireless communication networks, based on the channel state information (CSI) between a UE and multiple base stations (BSs) in the uplink. With the CSI from the available BSs, UE localization can be performed in different ways. On the one hand, a single neural network (NN) can be trained for the UE localization by considering the CSI from all the available BSs as one overall fingerprint of the user’s location. On the other hand, the CSI at each BS can be used to obtain an estimate of the UE’s position with a separate NN at each BS, and then the position estimates of all BSs are combined to obtain an overall estimate of the UE position. In this work, we show that UE localization with the latter approach can achieve a higher positioning accuracy. We propose to consider the uncertainty in the UE localization at each BS, such that overall UE’s position is determined by combining the position estimates of the different BSs based on the uncertainty at each BS. With this approach, a more reliable position estimate can be obtained in case of variations in the channel.

LTCC patch antenna array for 5G mobile applications featuring embedded air cavities. - In: 2022 International Conference on Electronics Packaging (ICEP 2022), (2022), S. 139-140
A LTCC patch antenna array was designed and fabricated in Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC) multilayer technology using picosecond laser structuring for precise manufacturing of embedded air cavities and feeding structures, which are beneficial for the antenna RF performance. Moreover, free-standing feeding vias in the embedded air cavities were successfully implemented in LTCC technology that enable a very simple and low-loss feed at the antenna ports. The 2x2 dual-polarized patch antenna array with embedded air cavities and transitions was first characterized by reflection measurements. The measured center frequency of the antenna is about 29.5 GHz and a bandwidth of nearly 1 GHz was achieved.

Descending staircase detection for service robots based on M-sequence UWB radar. - In: 2021 18th European Radar Conference, (2022), S. 29-32
Service robotics is expected to be one of the central growth industries of this century. The technological key to this lies in the sufficient perception of the environment, even under difficult conditions, because mobile robots have to orientate themselves and navigate without collision under all circumstances. However, the safe detection of especially descending stairs is a big challenge so far. In this paper, the results of descending staircase detection using UWB radar are shown. The individual steps of the signal processing from signal preparation to multi-target tracking are briefly explained and an outlook is given on how to classify a staircase based on the results. For all investigated stairs the edge of the first step could be detected reliably from a distance of 1.5 m and multiple steps are distinguishable as well.

Localization and navigation of service robots by means of M-sequence UWB radars. - In: 2021 18th European Radar Conference, (2022), S. 189-192
The use of service robots has become much more relevant in industry and retail in recent years. To be of best possible benefit to humans, an autonomous motion ability of the service robots is of central importance. This requires that the robot can perceive its surroundings as precisely as possible by using different sensors and their fusion. In contrast to optical sensors, an UWB sensor can, for example, detect small and almost invisible objects such as glass panes with high range resolution. In this paper, a signal processing chain for detection of the environment with M-sequence UWB sensors is proposed. The proposed chain includes pulse reconstruction based on calibration measurements, background subtraction, object detection based on CFAR techniques, and multi-target tracking based on the Kalman filter and the nearest-neighbor approach.

RF performance of USRP TwinRX daughterboard under influence of strong interferers. - In: 16th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation, (2022), insges. 5 S.
In this paper, we investigate the sensitivity of the software-defined radio (SDR) universal software radio peripheral (USRP) X310 with a TwinRX daughterboard to strong interferers. In a conducted test setup, the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) is measured under the influence of a mock-up Long-Term Evolution (LTE) base station. The frequency of the interferer is varied to analyze the effects over a wide frequency band, whereby a distinction is made between signals inside and outside the intermediate frequency (IF) band. The former can cause clipping at the analog-to-digital converter (ADC), while the latter are to be suppressed in the analog part of the software-defined radio. Here, leakage and higher-order mixing products make the receiver sensitive to spurious frequencies, whereby the performance degradation is particularly noticeable near the first intermediate frequency (IF1) of 1.25 GHz. At this point, even an interference signal with −28 dBm peak envelope power (PEP) causes an SINR loss of 3 dB.

A frequency domain approach for estimating the angular dependent delay of an UWB antenna. - In: 16th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation, (2022), insges. 5 S.
The procedure of estimating the angular dependent delay of an Ultra Wideband (UWB) antenna, directly in frequency domain, is presented. It is shown that in this approach any occurrences that can lead to inaccurate results, such as the windowing effect, can be entirely avoided. It alleviates the need to design a specific pulse, since the transfer function can be obtained by a frequency sweep. Moreover, polarization mismatch is accounted in the analysis. To this end, an UWB monopole antenna is designed and it is simulated with time and frequency domain solvers. The simulation results demonstrate that only frequency domain analysis is sufficient for the delay estimation. The outcome of this work provides a clear procedure for obtaining the angular dependent delay of an antenna in an accurate way.

In the present paper we introduce simultaneous multi-band measurements at sub-6 GHz and two mm-wave bands with the objective of characterizing propagation for multi-band channel modelling purposes in industry scenarios. The marginal power profiles show that the dominant scatterers are common in the different frequencies. In addition, a relation of decreasing average delay and angular spreads with increasing frequency is observed. The different measured parameters are contrasted with the 3GPP model for indoor factories.

Level measurement of low-permittivity material using an M-sequence UWB radar. - In: 16th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation, (2022), insges. 5 S.
Due to increasingly complex and automated manufacturing processes, the demands on the control parameters of these processes are also increasing. One parameter is the fill quantity of e.g. liquids in production plants, whose precise determination is of ever growing importance. Up to now, the exact level determination under difficult conditions, such as high ambient temperatures, has been a particular challenge. This paper demonstrates a novel method by which an M-sequence UWB radar can determine levels of low-permittivity materials in small metal containers. For this purpose, hot melt is used as an example. Thus, the influence of large temperature differences on the long-term stability of level measurement can also be investigated. The measurements show that the level of hot melt can be measured long-term stable with an accuracy of better than 3 mm.

Verification of THz channel sounder and delay estimation with over-the-air multipath artifact. - In: 16th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation, (2022), insges. 5 S.
In the present paper we introduce the empirical results of measurements with an over-the-air based propagation artifact for verification and validation of sub-THz and THz channel sounders and parameter estimation algorithms. This experiment produces a fixed number of multipath components with traceable propagation properties in the different domains that can be used to test resolution and performance. Because of the inherent characteristics of the measurement hardware, we have introduced an adaptation on a parametric high resolution estimation algorithm to account the imperfections of the channel sounder. The results have shown to account for a relative good performance of the sounder and the tested parametric and non-parametric estimation algorithms.

Fast gain switching on TwinRX USRPs. - In: 16th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation, (2022), insges. 5 S.
In this paper, we investigate the gain switching performance of the software-defined radio (SDR) universal software radio peripheral (USRP) X310 with the TwinRX daughterboard and propose a method to optimize it for fast transitions. This receiver uses a complex structure of two switchable amplifiers and two digital step attenuators to realize the wide gain setting range of up to 92 dB. Our measurements of the settling time show that the bulk of transitions between two gain settings take below 1.5 µs, but some require more than 50 µs, caused by the power-up of the switchable amplifiers. Based on this knowledge, we propose a modified switching regime, in which the amplifiers are not toggled in time-critical phases, e.g., during a running measurement, so that a transition time of 1.5 µs can be reliably realized. Thus, a gain switching range of 62 dB is achieved, within which, for example, a fast automatic gain control can be realized.

Improving medium frequency R-Mode ranging with GMSK modulation. - In: Proceedings of the 34th International Technical Meeting of the Satellite Division of the Institute of Navigation, (2021), S. 3227-3233
The R-Mode terrestrial navigation system evaluates the phase of two carriers next to a modulated signal, from which a range can be derived to allow positioning using different stations. To improve the accuracy of ranging, we propose in this paper to replace the currently used Minimum Shift Keying (MSK) modulation with Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK). By applying a Gaussian pulse shape for the bit transition to that of the MSK a higher spectral efficiency is achieved. If the data rate is kept constant, this reduces the energy of the modulated signal within the bandwidth of the phase estimator. This increases the accuracy of the added carrier estimate and achieves our goal of improved distance-estimation accuracy. In this paper, we compare the estimates for an R-Mode signal with MSK and two different GMSK modulations. The increased accuracy is verified using software and hardware in-the-loop simulations.

Preprocessing of freehand ultrasound synthetic aperture measurements using DNN. - In: 29th European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO 2021), (2021), S. 1401-1405
Manual ultrasonic inspection is a widely used Nondestructive Testing (NDT) technique due to its simplicity and compatibility with complex structures. However, in contrast to the data acquired using a robotic positioner, manual measurements suffer from perturbations caused by a variable coupling and a varying scanning density. Imaging techniques like the synthetic aperture focusing technique rely on an unperturbed dense measurement from an equidistant measurement grid. Consequently, imaging based on freehand measurements leads to artifacts. This work aims at reducing such artifacts by preprocessing the manual measurements using Deep Neural Networks (DNN). The training of a DNN requires a large set of labeled measurements which is difficult to obtain in NDT. In this work, we present a technique to train the DNN using only synthetic data. We show that the resulting DNN generalizes well on real measurements. We present an improvement in Generalized Contrast to Noise Ratio by a factor of 20 and 3 compared to omitting the preprocessing for synthetic and measurement data, respectively.

Compressed ultrasound computed tomography in NDT. - In: IEEE IUS 2021, (2021), insges. 4 S.
Ultrasound Computed Tomography (UCT) is challenging due to phenomena such as strong refraction, multiple scattering, and mode conversion. In NDT, large speed of sound contrasts lead to strong artifacts if such phenomena are not modeled correctly; however, enhanced models are computationally expensive. In this work, a two-step framework for Compressed UCT based on the integral approach to the solution of the Helmholtz equation is presented. It comprises a physically motivated forward step and an imaging step that solves a suitable inverse problem. Multiple scattering is accounted for through the use of Neumann series. Convergence problems of Neumann series in high contrast settings are addressed via Padé approximants. Compressed sensing is employed to reduce the computational complexity of the reconstruction procedure by reducing data volumes directly at the measurement step, avoiding redundancy in the data and allowing the ability to steer the admissible computational effort at the expense of reconstruction quality. The proposed method is shown to yield high quality reconstructions under heavy subsampling in the frequency and spatial domains.

Furthermore, the beamformer achieves an OP1dB of 10.5 dBm in Tx mode and an IP1dB of -27 dBm in Rx mode. The circuit occupies 11 mm2 and consumes 230 mW and 100 mW per channel in Tx and Rx modes respectively.

Energy-efficient autonomous resource selection for power-saving users in NR V2X. - In: 2021 IEEE 32nd Annual International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC), (2021), S. 972-978
Energy efficiency has recently drawn significant attention in diverse applications, such as vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. This paper investigates a joint energy efficiency and sum-rate maximization problem in autonomous resource selection in the 5G new radio (NR) vehicular communication while catering for reliability and latency requirements. An autonomous resource allocation problem is formulated as a ratio of sum-rate to energy consumption, where the objective is to maximize the total energy efficiency of power-saving users subject to the reliability and latency requirements. The energy efficiency problem is a mixed-integer programming optimization problem that is computationally complex when the number of users increases. Therefore, a heuristic algorithm, density of traffic-based resource allocation (DeTRA), is proposed to solve the problem. The traffic density per traffic type is considered a metric to split the radio resources and trigger an appropriate resource selection strategy. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing schemes in terms of energy efficiency.

Enable software-defined radios for real-time MIMO channel sounding. - In: To measure is to know, (2021), insges. 5 S.
This paper describes a field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based implementation of a switched multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channel sounder realization by use of software-defined radio (SDR) hardware (NI USRP-2954, X310 series with UBX 160 daughterboard). Essential basic functionalities are the synchronous switching of the antenna elements at both link ends and an integrated automatic gain control (AGC) at the receiver. To meet the high timing requirements in the switched MIMO setup, an FPGA-based AGC is introduced. The detector of the AGC is based on a sample-by-sample calculation of the average and maximum of the I/Q samples within a sliding window. The used SDR hardware allows a minimum AGC update interval of approx. 14 [my]s and a timing accuracy of the antenna switching of 5 ns. Our setup demonstrates the applicability of state-of-the-art SDRs as a sounding system for continuous acquisition of the time-variant, directional mobile radio channel.

Characterization of urban radio channels and base station antenna correlation in the 3.75 GHz band. - In: 2021 IEEE 93rd Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC2021-Spring), (2021), insges. 5 S.
Single side mMIMO channel measurements over 100 MHz bandwidth at 3.75 GHz were performed in two German cities. In dense urban as well as urban/suburban environments, a total track length of about 20 km has been measured. Multipath parameters by means of the high-resolution parameter estimator RIMAX are estimated and subsequently used to derive the statistics of large scale parameters and to allow a comparison to the statistics from standard channel model (3GPP, WINNER). While most of the parameters match quite well, for the angular spread at the base station (BS) partly larger deviations are observed. The correlation properties between the 32 dual polarized antenna patches of the BS antenna are investigated with respect to the antenna patch separation as well as to the distance between the BS and user equipment (UE).

Statistics of vehicular detectability for cooperative passive coherent location at urban crossroad. - In: Radar on the move, (2021), insges. 6 S.
The statistical study of target detectability is crucial in radar system design. In this regard, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the received signal at the radars receiver is a key parameter and therefore every influence on SNR should be taken into account. One of the main influences is the fluctuation of the target scattering/reflectivity to the incident electromagnetic wave. Consequently, the target fluctuation models and their accuracy become important. For monostatic radar system, various models can be found in the literature. In contrast, this paper studies a case of vehicular sensing scenario with multistatic configuration for an urban crossroad and proposes a modelling method of the target fluctuation by taking into account the target information, such as size, shape and composed materials, and the wave information, such as polarizations and aspect angles. Furthermore, the derived target fluctuation models are then applied directly to the formulation of the probability of detection for multistatic radar system. These probabilities of detection are also compared to that of monostatic radar system.

CSI-based localization with CNNs exploiting phase information. - In: 2021 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC), (2021), insges. 6 S.
In this paper we study the use of the Channel State Information (CSI) as fingerprint inputs of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for localization. We examine whether the CSI can be used as a distinct fingerprint corresponding to a single position by considering the inconsistencies with its raw phase that cause the CSI to be unreliable. We propose two methods to produce reliable fingerprints including the phase information. Furthermore, we examine the structure of the CNN and more specifically the impact of pooling on the positioning performance, and show that pooling over the subcarriers can be more beneficial than over the antennas.

UHF RFID tag performance measurements for SLCs applications using DIY-positioners. - In: Focus on linking antennas and propagation with the automotive and 5G industries, (2021), insges. 5 S.
With this paper, we present cost-effective techniques to characterize UHF RFID performance with regards to small load carriers (SLC). A self-developed turntable-positioner is used to measure the antenna pattern of tags attached to empty SLCs, as well as SLCs filled with scrap metal. With the tag-positioner we presented in a recent publication, read range degradation of various tags near dissipative and conductive electro static discharge (ESD) protective material was investigated. We also measured the sensitivity of around 80 different tags in front of an SLC made of ESD protective material and compared their performance to operation in free-space propagation. To conduct the measurements themselves, we use commercial off-the-shelf readers like the R420 from Impinj, which we control via low level reader protocol (LLRP) commands, implemented in Python.

On the modelling of the NLOS first multi-path component in stochastic spatial channel models. - In: Focus on linking antennas and propagation with the automotive and 5G industries, (2021), insges. 5 S.
Positioning and localization is one of the key features in the 5G and beyond wireless networks. Since accuracy strongly depends on the channel conditions, channel models are of special importance for the testing and development of such applications. While several localization methods are based on the time of arrival (ToA) and time-difference of arrival (TDoA), stochastic spatial channel models (SCMs) as the 3GPP don't consider absolute values on the delays of the non-line of sight (NLOS) multi-path components (MPCs), making these models not appropriate for these applications. Therefore, we investigate the time and angular characteristics of the first multi-path component (FMPC) using multi-band ray tracing (RT) simulations in order to extend stochastic SCMs to support localization applications in NLOS.

MIMO-TDL model parameter estimation from V2I channel sounding. - In: Focus on linking antennas and propagation with the automotive and 5G industries, (2021), insges. 5 S.
This contribution proposes modeling methods for MIMO-TDL channel models under new evaluation method, which is non-WSSUS. V2X channels cannot be assumed to follow the WSSUS assumption due to high inherent mobility. It can be extended to non-WSSUS by employing an ON/OFF process (persistence process). An algorithm to select taps and estimate their parameters from measured data is illustrated. Meanwhile, the slow and fast fading is separated from received signal to assess the fading distribution of taps. The analysis investigates correlation coefficient among taps persistence process, as well as, among taps amplitude. Additionally, an approach is discussed to develop a time varying MIMO-TDL model, whose parameters are varying over time.

Accuracy of fill level measurement by an M-sequence UWB guided wave radar. - In: Focus on linking antennas and propagation with the automotive and 5G industries, (2021), insges. 4 S.
Due to increasingly complex and automated manufacturing processes of producing companies, the demands on the control parameters of these processes are also increasing. An important parameter is the fill quantity, whose precise determination is becoming of growing importance. It is of additional interest to be able to automatically determine what filling material is currently being used to ensure that the correct material is in the container. This paper shows with which accuracy an M-sequence UWB guided wave radar can determine levels in metallic and non-metallic containers and which possibilities exist to determine the filling material. First, the principle of level measurement using guided wave radar is explained and the measurement setup is described. Afterward, the measurement results are shown and discussed. The measurements show that the level can be measured with an accuracy of less than 0.5 mm. In addition, level fluctuations can be detected with an accuracy of 3 µm.

Practical aspects on the noise floor estimation and cut-off margin in channel sounding applications. - In: Focus on linking antennas and propagation with the automotive and 5G industries, (2021), insges. 5 S.
The characterization of propagation at mm-waves and THz is obtaining relevance since they are expected to be the frequency bands of the future wireless generations. Hence, measurements conducted all around the world with different equipments need to be comparable by establishing common methodologies and best-practice guidelines. As an example, all measurements are affected by noise, but its estimation and removal are not standardized. Therefore, in the present paper we define a methodology on the estimation of the noise floor and the cut-off margin for its subsequent removal. We firstly analyse the influence of the channel sounder noise floor on the estimation of different propagation parameters directly from the measured channel impulse responses (CIRs), showing the need of its removal before any processing of the measurements. Later, we introduce an algorithm to estimate the noise floor in the presence of signal, and the cut-off margin. Finally, we evaluate its performance empirically with measurements.

Modeling of transitions in received power for an urban V2I scenario. - In: Focus on linking antennas and propagation with the automotive and 5G industries, (2021), insges. 5 S.
In this contribution, we investigate how changes in received power for a vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communication scenario in an urban environment can be modeled. Significant changes are not only observed for line of sight (LoS) to none line of sight (NLoS) transitions but also when the mobile station travels from a narrow street onto a crossroad and other maneuvers, even with no LoS being present. To model these transitions, in terms of received power, we propose a variant of an arctangent function. We fit the model to different exemplary transitions, which were found in channel sounding data collected in a V2I measurement campaign. We discuss the results in terms of quality of fit and the estimated parameters.

Cost-effective measurement methods to investigate RF leakages in UHF RFID e-Kanban racks. - In: Focus on linking antennas and propagation with the automotive and 5G industries, (2021), insges. 4 S.
In this paper, we present cost-effective techniques to assess shielding performance of RFID Kanban racks equipped with UHF RFID readers. This includes a self-developed positioner, made from roof battens and stepper motors, which positions a tag in a vertical area around each side of the rack to sense the radio frequency (RF) distribution emitted from the reader. For the measurements on the shelves, we sticked 30 tags on a foam board in a 20 cm grid to detect leakages on the horizontal planes. The overall material cost is less than 50 € and we made the documentation and control software publicly available.

Characterization of slow and fast fading in V2I channels for smart cities. - In: Focus on linking antennas and propagation with the automotive and 5G industries, (2021), insges. 5 S.
A vehicle to X (V2X) propagation channel corresponds to a wideband channel that means a receiver (Rx) able to resolve multipath components. In contrast to a narrow band channel, multipath components are indistinguishable at the receiver and seen as a single composite signal, thus fading approximation has been assumed as the Rayleigh fading. It is interesting to see how the fading is characterized in V2X applications because the channel corresponds to the wideband and it can not be assumed to follow wide sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (WSSUS) assumption due to inherent mobility. The aim of this paper is to characterize and study slow fading and fast fading variations of each tap, which is selected from measurement data. This investigation pertains to three various scenarios, which are omnidirectional antenna, two antennas faced directly to each other and two antennas faced away from each other. In each scenario, LOS and two different NLOS categories are studied.

Projection-OTA, over-the-air testing by reconfigurable reflecting structures. - In: Focus on linking antennas and propagation with the automotive and 5G industries, (2021), insges. 5 S.
The bottleneck in OTA testing electrically large equipment is the large number of sources required for sufficient angular density. That is, if the sources are active. In that case, high-bandwidth, high-frequency equipment with excellent stability, processing power, and configurability is needed per antenna element. The costs of scaling up the current MIMO OTA configuration to higher frequencies and/or large equipment is prohibitive. In case passive radiators are used, the maximum control speed is determined by the maximum expected Doppler frequency. Such performance is order of magnitudes cheaper, even for large numbers of elements. In this contribution, we will present a new OTA concept that uses passively radiating reconfigurable structures and is inherently bi-directional. The concept that we call Projection-OTA, accommodates test objects in FR1 that are electrically large to very large and shows good prospects for emulating beam dynamics for testing 5G NR in FR2. Whether such passive structures will be made up by reflect arrays, meta-surfaces, or even intelligent surfaces is to be determined. We will discuss the prospects and limitations of this concept.

Realistic emulation of GNSS testing scenarios using 3D wave field synthesis in an OTA testbed. - In: Focus on linking antennas and propagation with the automotive and 5G industries, (2021), insges. 5 S.
While traditional testing methods as conducted and open field tests have their limitations in terms of realism and repeatability of the scenario's conditions, Over-the-Air (OTA) testing enhances the way that GNSS and mobile communications systems with integrated antennas are tested, since it provides the freedom to accurately emulate an impinging wave with arbitrary polarization and direction radiated from any source/reflection such as GNSS satellites and terrestrial base stations. Therefore, real world scenarios can be precisely reproduced with total control of the environment's conditions. In this context, this paper describes the process to implement full polarimetric 3D Wave Field Synthesis (WFS) in an OTA testbed, from the principle to characterize the electromagnetic (EM) field in three dimensions to the system calibration and correspondent verification measurements inside the anechoic chamber, which will provide a deeper insight on the quality and reliability of the EM field for testing purposes.

The performance measurement of the 60GHz mmWave module for IoRL network. - In: 2020 IEEE International Symposium on Broadband Multimedia Systems and Broadcasting (BMSB), (2020), insges. 5 S.
As one of the key features in 5G network, Millimeter wave (mmWave) technology can provide the ultra-wide bandwidth to support higher data rate. However, for high frequency band, mmWave signal still suffers from the high pathloss, the multipath fading and the signal blockage issue, especially in the indoor environment. For different application scenarios, the channel conditions and quality of services (QoS) are quite different. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the impact of the mmWave channel on the system performance. This paper investigates and measures the performance of a 60GHz mmWave module that is exploited for the downlink and uplink high data rate transmission in the Internet of Radio-Light (IoRL) project. The coverage area and the throughput of the mmWave module is estimated by measuring the error vector magnitude (EVM) of received signals with different transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX) angles and at different locations in a laboratory. In this paper, the measurement environment and system setup are introduced. After that, the waveform design for the measurement is also discussed. The measurement results show that this 60GHz mmWave module can provide an acceptable performance only in some cases, which restricts its application scenarios.

A framework for developing algorithms for estimating propagation parameters from measurements. - In: 2020 IEEE Globecom workshops (GC Wkshps), (2020), insges. 6 S.
A framework is proposed for developing and evaluating algorithms for extracting multipath propagation components (MPCs) from measurements collected by sounders at millimeter-wave (mmW) frequencies. To focus on algorithmic performance, an idealized model is proposed for the spatial frequency response of the propagation environment measured by a sounder. The input to the sounder model is a pre-determined set of MPC parameters that serve as the "ground truth". A three-dimensional angle-delay (beamspace) representation of the measured spatial frequency response serves as a natural domain for implementing and analyzing MPC extraction algorithms. Metrics for quantifying the error in estimated MPC parameters are introduced. Initial results are presented for a greedy matching pursuit algorithm that performs a least-squares (LS) reconstruction of the MPC path gains within the iterations. The results indicate that the simple greedy-LS algorithm has the ability to extract MPCs over a large dynamic range, and suggest several avenues for further performance improvement through extensions of the greedy-LS algorithm as well as by incorporating features of other algorithms, such as SAGE and RIMAX.

Bi-static delay-Doppler reference for cooperative passive vehicle-to-X radar applications. - In: IET microwaves, antennas & propagation, ISSN 1751-8733, Bd. 14 (2020), 14, S. 1749-1757
Automotive radar systems are indispensable for advanced driver assistance systems and traffic safety. Besides existing monostatic radar techniques, bi-static radar sensing like passive coherent location offers additional options to improve the radar visibility of vulnerable road users. Regarding the testing and evaluation of signal processing algorithms including parameter estimation, it is essential to provide electromagnetically shielded and reproducible measurement conditions, in addition to field tests in real traffic scenarios. This study describes the possibility to emulate relevant performance parameters for bi-static radar scenarios in the frequency range from 1 GHz to 6 GHz in a metal-shielded semi-anechoic chamber. Of special interest are the bi-static angle between transmitter, target, and receiver, and the resulting bi-static Doppler frequencies of a realistic vehicular traffic scenario. According to the concept of cooperative passive coherent location, Doppler scattering measurements are presented and compared to electromagnetic simulations. The authors find promising agreement between measured and ground truth data in the delay-Doppler spectrum.

Hardware architecture for ultra-wideband channel impulse response measurements using compressed sensing. - In: 28th European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO 2020), (2020), S. 1663-1667
We propose a compact hardware architecture for measuring sparse channel impulse responses (IR) by extending the M-Sequence ultra-wideband (UWB) measurement principle with the concept of compressed sensing. A channel is excited with a periodic M-sequence and its response signal is observed using a Random Demodulator (RD), which observes pseudo-random linear combinations of the response signal at a rate significantly lower than the measurement bandwidth. The excitation signal and the RD mixing signal are generated from compactly implementable Linear Feedback Shift registers (LFSR) and operated from a common clock. A linear model is derived that allows retrieving an IR from a set of observations using Sparse-Signal-Recovery (SSR). A Matrix-free model implementation is possible due to the choice of synchronous LFSRs as signal generators, resulting in low computational complexity. For validation, real measurement data of a time-variant channel containing multipath components is processed by simulation models of our proposed architecture and the classic M-Sequence method. We show successful IR recovery using our architecture and SSR, outperforming the classic method significantly in terms of IR measurement rate. Compared to the classic method, the proposed architecture allows faster measurements of sparse time-varying channels, resulting in higher Doppler tolerance without increasing hardware or data stream complexity.

Measurement-based determination of parameters for non-stationary TDL models with reduced number of taps. - In: IET microwaves, antennas & propagation, ISSN 1751-8733, Bd. 14 (2020), 14, S. 1719-1732
This study proposes a new strategy of extracting parameters for tapped delay line (TDL) channel models from vehicle to infrastructure channel measurements. The proposed approach is based on an already existing method to derive parameters for a non-stationary model using first-order Markov chains. It will be shown that with the proposed method, the number of taps necessary to regenerate the delay spread of a channel can be significantly reduced. An approach will be discussed to evaluate the performance of the model. The feasibility of the method will be confirmed using channel sounding measurements.

Stochastic modeling of short and long term clock skew. - In: IEEE IFCS-ISAF 2020, (2020), insges. 4 S.
Traditional black box clock skew models are either the power-law noise model or a more recent approach based on auto-regressive (AR) filters. Unfortunately, neither algorithm can accurately model short and long term skew due to limited degrees of freedom or stability constraints. We propose a novel model that employs the current AR algorithm recursively with appropriate pre- and post-processing to achieve numeric stability and accurate reproduction of short and long term effects. The model coefficients are derived from a measured skew signal, with the model output matching an exemplary original signal closely in terms of Allan variance and time-domain behavior.

Characterizing GPS disciplined oscillators for distributed vehicle-to-X measurement applications. - In: IEEE IFCS-ISAF 2020, (2020), insges. 4 S.
In this paper, we analyze the reference signal stability of 1 PPS and 10 MHz signals provided by a low-cost GPS disciplined oscillator under application specific conditions using a comparable light-weight measurement system based on software defined radio and digital signal processing. In mobile measurement scenarios, GPS signal impairments are inevitable, due to obstacles such as buildings, street canyons, bridges, and tunnels. Therefore, we preliminarily characterize four GPSDOs under test in a stationary setup using controlled GPS reception loss to drive them into alternating operation modes, namely free-run, disciplined and holdover mode. Further, we conducted a more than 100 km real-world diversified test drive to characterize the performance of the particular GPSDO as realistically as possible for the intended use in mobile V2X measurements.

Measurement-based performance analysis of cooperative diversity for satellite terminals in a moving convoy. - In: IEEE 77th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC Spring), 2013, ISBN 978-1-4673-6336-5, (2013), insges. 5 S.
In this paper we discuss the impact of cooperative satellite diversity on the availability of the land mobile satellite (LMS) channel. By the use of multiple terminals the overall probability to encounter conditions where all terminals are in a bad channel state is reduced. This reduction depends on the number of terminals and the terminal distance. The results presented in this paper are completely based on the analysis of measurements. These were conducted for two geostationary satellites and four different environments using a single mobile satellite terminal. Thus, in order to virtually increase the number of terminals we rely on a convoy scenario using shifted versions of the data. Analyzing up to four cooperative terminals and different terminal distances a significant bad state reduction is already achieved for rather small distances.
