What is an organ transplant? Is there an age limit? What requirements must be met in order to be able to donate organs after death? Which organs can be donated? How does organ donation work? How are the recipients of the donated organs selected? Why is it important to record your own decision to donate organs?

There are many questions on an intensely debated topic, many different attitudes, many emotions and opinions. A lot is being done politically to increase the number of organ donations, but this is still low compared to other European countries.

The question of one's own willingness to donate organs and tissue after death is very personal and not easy for many people to answer. After all, the topic is closely linked to one's own death and that of other people. It therefore often triggers uncertainty and anxiety. This makes it all the more important to discuss the pros and cons and exchange opinions.

As an intensive care physician, I would like to invite you to engage with a controversial topic.

The speaker, Dr. med. Heike Schlegel-Höfner, is Deputy Medical Director of the Ilm-Kreis-Kliniken and Chief Physician of the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine, Pain Therapy and Palliative Medicine.
