Helping to shape the economic and social challenges of tomorrow today: Students on the new Master`s program in Business Administration with a technical orientation (TBWL), which starts at TU Ilmenau in the winter semester 2024/25, will gain this expertise. It is aimed at motivated young people with a Bachelor's degree in business administration or economics and a basic knowledge of engineering and natural sciences. The new program provides them with the necessary methodological and technical expertise to solve complex economic problems in close cooperation with engineers. The research-oriented course focuses on future-oriented topics such as sustainable production management and logistics, innovation management, Industry 4.0, renewable energy technology and next-generation VR applications. Those who find a traditional business administration degree too one-sided and a degree in industrial engineering too lacking in commercial aspects have been able to study "Business Administration with a technical orientation" at TU Ilmenau since 2021. The Master's program of the same name now follows on seamlessly from this.
"In a rapidly developing technological business world, basic knowledge of computer science, technology and natural sciences is indispensable for economists," says Prof. Anja Geigenmüller, Vice President for Teaching and Learning at TU Ilmenau: "There is a high demand for specialists who deal with the various aspects of our modern digitalized economy and society from an interdisciplinary perspective and also take into account criteria such as sustainability."
In addition to compulsory subjects in business administration such as quantitative corporate planning, business ethics and sustainability management, TBWL Master's students can therefore choose from an extensive range of electives in business administration, economics, engineering and natural sciences. In addition to traditional business and technology topics, the electives address issues such as the technological and social impact of advancing digitalization and the handling of large and complex digital data. However, they also deal with sustainability topics such as sustainable production management, energy economics, resource and environmental economics, resource-efficient manufacturing processes and the fundamentals of sustainable energy and mobility systems. There are also specialization and supplementary subjects such as IT architecture and security management, data analysis and data mining, forecasting and international business law.
The new Master's program in Business Administration with a technical orientation lasts four semesters and is taught in German. However, numerous English-language courses are also taught by internationally renowned experts from TU Ilmenau. In this way, students also learn skills that are important in global value chains.
In addition to lectures and seminars, students are involved in international research projects at TU Ilmenau from an early stage. Established and new university partnerships also offer various opportunities for international exchange. The Master TBWL prepares students comprehensively for management positions in technology and innovation management, but also in supply chain management, management consulting or organizational development, finance and accounting or marketing and sales.

Applications for the Master's program in Business Administration with a Technical Orientation are open until September 15, 2024. Graduates of a similar Bachelor's degree or a Bachelor's degree in industrial engineering are admitted without conditions. Students who have a purely business-related Bachelor's degree without a technical component can also study with minor conditions in the form of additional subjects.
