Mostly 'men in suits' : the ASEAN summit and integration as news in Southeast Asia. - In: Pacific journalism review, ISSN 2324-2035, Bd. 25 (2019), 1/2, S. 193-213

This article is a preliminary examination of how Southeast Asian media frame the regional integration of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as a news topic. Without grassroots engagement, the ASEAN integration will inevitably fall short of its grand objectives, and crucial to building grassroots engagement is media coverage capable of building audience interest and appreciation. Based on articles published during the major ASEAN summit events in 2018, the authors identified resonant themes in the reportage and discussed these vis-a-vis the documented character of the different media environments in the region. It was found that the axis of the reportage is the declarations and actions of the heads of state, with very few human interest and context-building stories that would have built audience engagement in what is otherwise an affair revolving around 'men in suits'. Moreover, the journalistic emphasis on consensus and state initiatives reflects continuing adherence to the tenets of the development journalism framework, but this can also be interpreted as the dominance of 'prominence' as a news value (i.e. stories are framed according to the gestures of prominent individuals). These findings call attention to the need for re-thinking reportage on potentially high-stake phenomena such as the ASEAN integration.

"YouTube helps us a lot." Media repertoires and social integration of Iraqi and Syrian refugee families in Germany. - In: Revue fran¸caise des sciences de l’information et de la communication, Bd. 17 (2019), S. 1-20

This article examines the media repertoires of 10 Syrian and 10 Iraqi refugee families (n=100) in the city of Erlangen, Germany. Based on media repertoire theory (Hasebrink and Hepp 2017) and through a qualitative approach combining several methods of data collection (qualitative interviews, focus groups and media repertoire drawings), we analyse how the cumulative media practices and devices of refugee families (media repertoires) relate to their social and cultural integration in their host society. Our findings indicate that younger refugees, which are more interested in German content had repertoires and networks that reflected such, while older refugees are still origin focused in both networks and content. These findings emphasize the importance of media repertoires in highlighting practices that can integrate or isolate refugees in different sociocultural contexts and their host societies.

Conquering the box office: factors influencing success of international movies in Russia
Update. - Ilmenau : Ilmenau University of Technology, Institute of Economics, 2019. - 1 Online-Ressource (32 Seiten). - (Ilmenau economics discussion papers ; vol. 25, no. 131)

This paper empirically examines factors influencing box office success of international movies in Russia between 2012 and 2016. It adds to existing research on national movie markets, by highlighting the relevance of differences in culture, institutions, language, and consumption habits for movie success. Three groups of success factors are distinguished: distribution related (e.g. budget, franchise), brand and star effects (e.g. top actors or directors), and evaluation sources (e.g. critics and audience rating). We add novel region-specific variables like seasonality, time span between the world and local release, attendance of international stars at Russian movie premieres, and title adaptation to Russian culture. The results indicate that budget, franchise, employment of popular actors and directors, electronic word of mouth and audience ratings exert a significantly positive influence on Russian box office success. However, we find significantly negative effects for international critics and, interestingly, the adaption of movie titles. The main contributions of our study are (i) success factors vary between countries with different cultures, (ii) region-specific factors matter, and consequently (iii) results from one market (e.g. the US) cannot easily be generalised.
