Calculation of strongly coupled thermal and electromagnetic fields in pulse-loaded devices. - In: IEEE transactions on magnetics, ISSN 1941-0069, Volume 38 (2002), issue 2, part 1, Seite 925-928

In most applications, the coupling between thermal and electromagnetic fields can be assumed weak without loss of accuracy due to the differences between the time constants in order of magnitudes. But, especially for devices loaded with high electrical energy pulses, this may be no longer valid, since rapid temperature rises may influence electrical parameters much stronger. In such cases, stationary solutions are not sufficient and the transients have to be calculated. Therefore, we developed a numerical code based on finite differences which uses a backward-differentiation formulae solver. Comparisons to usual time-integration schemes have shown a considerable speed-up for equal accuracies.

Application of the FDTD for the optimization of broad-band transitions between different types of transmission lines. - In: IEEE transactions on magnetics, ISSN 1941-0069, Volume 38 (2002), issue 2, part 1, Seite 593-596

We present the application of an optimizer-coupled finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulator for the optimal design of waveguide transitions. The software package contains a standard FDTD algorithm and common optimization routines. The illustrated approach is a very efficient way for various design problems of wave-guide discontinuities. Several types of transitions in an unusual aligned geometry were investigated. A broad-band minimization of reflection losses up to 14 GHz was achieved. Close agreement has been obtained between FDTD results and measurement over a wide frequency range.
