Medical sensor placement with a screw motion. - In: Actuator 10, (2010), S. 1047-1050

In order to use dry electrodes for Electroencephalography (EEG), a direct contact between electrode and scalp as well as a sufficient interfusion of the detaining layer of hair is necessary. The aim of the present development is a fluidic driven, compliant structure (actuator) of biomedical silicone, for positioning of one or more dry electrodes on the scalp while performing a screw motion. An analytic model was obtained for the geometrical parameterization of the structure and finite element method simulations were performed. The results of the parameter studies showed, that the number of rounded cones has no significant influence on the maximum relative rotation angle. The mean displacement along z direction is rising with increased number of rounded cones. Concurrently, the ratio of mean displacement and relative rotation angle increases as well. Smaller radii of the cones promote higher relative rotation angles at distinct pressure rates. For manufacturing of the structures good the transfer molding technique proved to be adequate. The motion behavior of the prototype showed good qualitative correlation with the simulation results.
