Metallic cellular materials reveal a variety of unique features for new and innovative applications in construction and lightweight. Furthermore they show depending on the pore structure a high compressive strength, high stiffness and possibly electrically conductive. The good damping and, for open-cell foams, the possibility of permeability expand the applications of these materials. Aluminium foams are machinable and can expand to complex geometries. Thereby flexible and complex foam cores can be produced for use in casting and injection molding process, thus the possible scope of application for such structural components is greatly increased. So far prototypes of aluminium foam (open or closed porous) and polypropylene or polystyrene were prepared in casting processes. Hybrid components were produced by recasting with plastic. Because of that, the compressive strength will increase as opposed to pure aluminium foam. At the same time aluminium foam cores achieve a weight reduction, compared to plastic components with solid execution. This material combination illustrates the high potential of lightweight.
