Thermal Plasma jets are useful tools in powder processing. In addition to known thermal spray technologies especially the thermal inductively coupled RF-plasma (ICP) has some benefits for such applications. It consists of 3 conenctric tubes, centred in an induction coil. The principle of plasma generation is similar to the one of induction heating. A large volume plasma with a relatively low velocity is generated, so the dwell time of the axially injected particles in the plasma jet ist high and large particles ca be molten. The absence of electrodes prevents impurities and allows sthe use of reactive gases. This offers a wide range of possibilities in the densifaction, spheroidization and surface modification of powders. Examples are given for the plasma treatment of different materials as well as for the synthesis of nano fine metal and ceramic powoders.
