Microstructure and corrosion resistance for the electrodeposited nickel from watts-type baths. - In: Journal of optoelectronics and advanced materials, ISSN 1454-4164, Bd. 12 (2010), 6, S. 1372-1377

Electrodeposition processes using direct current (DC) require the use of additives to control deposit structure and properties as well as current distribution. This work presents a study on the influence of electrodeposited nickel prepared from a Watts bath at different current density ranging from 1 Adm-2 to 10 Adm-2 at pH = 4. The structure of the nickel layers was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Vickers hardness of deposited layers was also investigated. The electrochemical behaviour of the nickel layers was investigated by polarization potentiodynamic and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods. Protection level against corrosion was evaluated by polarization curves and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Important results include the formation of uniform deposits showing fine grain and excellent protection against corrosion.

Current transients and mass variations in asprepared and heattreated anodic alumina films were measured during reanodizing by means of voltammetry and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM), respectively. Aluminum electrodes (100 nm) on quartz crystals were prepared by thermal evaporation. Anodic alumina films were formed on the surface of Al electrodes in aqueous solutions of oxalic (0.3 M) and phosphoric (0.6 M) acid in the potentiostatic regime. The EQCM experiments did not detect an overshoot in the mass variation of the Al electrode during reanodizing of heattreated anodic alumina films. The observed current overshoot in transients proved the presence of electrons and electron holes injected from the contacts in the bulk of the oxide. This can be explained by the emergence of excess electrons in the barrier layer of the alumina films due to a change in the mobility of the electrons.
