Cu cap layer on Ni8/Cu(001): reorientation and Tc-shift. - In: The European physical journal, ISSN 1434-6036, Bd. 65 (2008), 4, S. 499-504

Adding a non-magnetic Cu overlayer on Ni8/Cu(001) is known to induce the reorientation of the magnetic easy axis from in-plane to out-of-plane and to reduce the Curie temperature. In this paper both effects are described on the same footing using an effective Heisenberg trilayer. The model takes into account thermal fluctuations of the magnetization and allows to separate explicitly between two possible mechanisms behind the experimental observations, namely between a reduction of the magnetic moment by hybridization and a lattice relaxation at the Ni/Cu interface. Ferromagnetic resonance data for the reorientation and the decreased Curie temperature due to the Cu cap layer are best reproduced by assuming a reduction of the magnetic moment at the interface by approximately 1/3.

Calculation and interpretation of surface-plasmon-polariton features in the reflectivity of metallic nanowire arrays. - In: International journal of modern physics, ISSN 1793-6578, Bd. 22 (2008), 25/26, S. 4442-4451

The far-field reflectivity of metallic nanowire arrays designed to show strong surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) resonances is studied numerically. The results of calculations in time and frequency space as well as the results of semi-analytic theories using different approximative boundary conditions at the metal surfaces are evaluated and compared. Good agreement between all different methods is obtained in most cases. The SPP-related features are superimposed on a strongly varying background. Combining FDTD simulations, finite element results, and semi-analytical calculations, the microscopic origin of the background contribution is identified. Resonant transmission through sub-wavelength slits leads to pronounced oscillations in the far-field reflectivity as a function of the height of the nanowires.
